What is Vein Stripping?
Vein stripping is a surgical procedure used to remove a large section of a damaged or faulty vein. This is most often required when varicose veins have become so enlarged that they pose a danger to the patient and must be removed to reduce the risk of further complications. During the procedure, an incision is made in the skin through which a thin, flexible tool is inserted and moved down the length of the vein. The vein is then tied off (or litigated) and removed through the incision. The procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis, with the majority of patients returning home the day of the procedure.

Other less invasive procedures may also be used to treat varicose veins in less severe cases, so patients will need to schedule a consultation to discuss the proper course of treatment. Some common signs that a vein stripping procedure may be required include:
Large, rope-like varicose veins that can’t be effectively treated with other, less invasive procedures
Swelling, aching, or heaviness in the legs associated with varicose vein formation
Ulcers or open sores forming as a result of poor circulation in a damaged vein
Sometimes a vein stripping procedure is combined with a less invasive form of treatment like sclerotherapy, which can be used to address cosmetic issues associated with smaller, less damaged blood vessels. Despite being an outpatient procedure, you may not be able to return to work and normal activities for a few days and should avoid any strenuous recreational activities for several weeks.
